Yes, event organisers need insurance to protect their finances. Insurance will protect against damages and injury claims.

For your insurance to be valid you must:

  • Perform a risk assessment and have risk management procedures in place
  • Ensure the individual responsible for the fireworks is trained
  • Ensure fireworks have been reputably sourced
  • Ensure the venue is large enough so crowds are a safe distance from the fireworks and bonfire

We may be able to cover legal costs and compensation if a claim is made by a member of the public or your volunteers. This is only if the damages and claim arise in direct connection with the event.

For any event that invites the public, insurance is recommended. If this is a ticketed event, insurance is mandatory on behalf of the event organiser, protecting claimants which could include guests, employees or volunteers. We always say having insurance in place and not utilising it is definitely better than learning you needed it after-the-fact.

Bonfires require the permission of the council or owner of the premises. Nuisance smoke needs to be anticipated, as does noise; and what is burned needs to be specified. Burning of waste is not allowed unless permitted by the Environment Agency.
